dermai zan young

dermai zan young is a Canadian feminist artist whose work challenges societal norms that devalue and weaken women. Struggling through a nine-year battle with chronic illness, she began her artistic practice in 2019, inspired by online pour-painting techniques. Her work acknowledges that tapping into righteous rage is required to change the status quo in today’s world. Her exploration of acrylics leads to vibrant and textured pieces that reflect the importance of embodiment and self-expression in women’s empowerment.  

“The bastards got me down, and to get back up, I had to feel my feelings and express them—aka, art.” dermai believes women need their individual and collective strength to dream a better vision of the world and to nurture it into being.  

In 2021, she exhibited at The Holy Art Gallery’s Symphonia competition in London, winning 2nd prize, and in 2023 she showcased her work in New York, Paris, Amsterdam, and Brussels as part of the Art on Loop group exhibitions. After a full recovery in 2025, dermai is expanding her body of work from a Kibbutz in northern Israel.
